Kanchenjunga & Makalu Area Treks
This is the third tallest mountain of in the world; 8586m, the massive block of rock and ice that straddles the border between Nepal and Sikkim in India. There have been relatively few attempts to climb this mighty mountain, partly because Kanchanjunga is worshipped as a tutelary spirit by the Sikkimese. The first serious attempt to conquer the peak was the 1905 expedition lead by the occultist Aleister Crowley, but a British team finally gained the summit in 1995.
There are two possible approach routes to kanchanjunga. The trek to South base camp starts from Surkhet near Taplejung, taking two weeks to climb to the Yalung Glacier and return. The difficult three week trek to north base camp can be started from Basantapur near Hile or from Suketar. It is possible to combine these two treks by crossing the Mirgin La 4663m or Lapsang La 5160m.
The kanchanjunga area is the homeland of the Limbu people, who speak language related to Tibetan and follw a mixture Buddhist, Hindu and animist beliefs.
Makalu, the valley of the mighty Arun Kosi runs north from the plains to the fringes of Makalu Barun national park, in the foothill of Makalu (8463m), the fifth highest mountain in the world. This broad and fertile valley forms the approach route for the trek to Makalu Base Camp and the end point for the culturally interesting exit trek from the Tumlingtar to Khumbu region/area.
Both Kanchanjunga and Kakalu is known as restriction area; permit restrictions means that it is only possible to walk here as part
of an organised camping trek arranged through register trekking agency;
for an example Trekking Team Pvt. Ltd.
